2) Math in the Real World: the Great Wall of China
Just how long is the Great Wall of China? It is so long, and was built over such a long period of time, that it has been very hard to say for sure. Experts are still trying to figure it out! But we now know more about at least one major section of the wall that was built during the Ming Dynasty.
This section is 8,851.8 km long. It has 723 beacon towers, 7,062 lookout towers, and 3,357 wall platforms.
Test your real-world math abilities with these questions! Be sure to show your work.
Type your answers to the following questions on a Google Doc. Name the Document "Great Wall Your Name." Be sure to share the document with your teacher when you are done.
1. If there was one person posted to guard every beacon tower, lookout tower, and wall platform, how many people would be needed in all?
2. Imagine that there weren't enough guards to fill the total you calculated for question 1. In fact, there are only enough guards for alternating towers and platforms. If there was only one guard posted for every two towers and platforms, how many would be needed in all?
3. The Ming Dynasty section is just one part of the Great Wall. What would the length of the wall be if it turns out that this section is only half of the total length?
